Wind Turbine Blade Design

For hundreds of years now, people have been using wind turbines to generate energy. Even now, the basic concept that underpins this type of device is the same as it ever was, but design aspects of the blades used have undergone a series of changes over the years. The basic advantage of modern blade design is that it gives wind turbines the ability to generate more power from less wind now than ever before, which in turn makes it realistic to use smaller and quieter turbines.

The earliest wind turbine blades were essentially just large mats made from reeds. Their main weak point was a lack of durability. If the winds were too strong, these blades would often be damaged.

Reed blades came to be replaced by lighter and more reliable cloth sails. This type of blade was combined with a vertical axis design to create some of the early windmills, which were used to process grain with the help of wind power.

Eventually, horizontal axis wind turbines came into vogue, in many cases using wooden blades. The inispiration for the new turbine designs was the design of airplane blades, which had recently made major strides. Although much lighter, wooden blades were nevertheless able to generate much more power than previous turbine blades.

This was the period in which wind turbines were first used as a means of producing electricity. Larger wind turbines were soon introduced to capitalize on these improvements, generating power for commercial operations.

At this time, the difference between horizontal axis turbine blades and vertical axis turbine blades became that much more distinct. The following horizontal axis blades would be different in their shape and pitch, materials, and the number of blades used per rotor.

In most cases, 3-blade designs are the norm for horizontal axis wind turbines, as they offer the best balance of stability and rotor speed. Modern turbines make use of composite blades, which are both lightweight and durable. Composite blades give wind turbines the ability to spin faster and generate more energy as well as pick up low-speed winds, making them significantly more efficient.

Some of the most interesting and effective designs available currently belong to vertical axis wind turbines. The rotation for these units is usually provided by features that take advantage of either the lift or drag of the wind.

The most frequently cited advantage of vertical axis wind turbine designs is their ability to provide power regardless of wind direction. Thanks to this feature, vertical axis turbines produce the most consistent output of power of any style currently on the market. What’s more, because vertical axis turbines usually don’t require a tower, they’re often favored by residential users.

What are 3 different types of wind turbine motors?

i know that a wind turbine has a motor to produce electricity, but i need 3 different types of motors, can somebody just list 3. its all i need


Answer:

1) DC electric generator, to charge batteries directly and run DC
appliances or inverters run from batteries to give you AC current

2) AC synchronous generator. These AC generators get field excitation directly from your electric company so if the electricity goes down from the power company, so does your generator. But the good thing is they are synchronized with the Hz of (60Hz) and you don't need an inverter to and batteries to smooth out the sine wave of current and voltage. You get a steady 60 cycle current.

3) regular AC induction motor.This will produce electricity that has to be used on the spot (converted to heat water or something) and has variable frequencies depending on rotor speed of turbine. But it can be run thru diodes (just like car alternator) to convert to DC to charge batteries. And then the batteries are run to power DC equipment or run thru an inverter for things that need AC
